Dr Brian Nankivell
Nephrologist
Dr Nankivell is currently a practising nephrologist and transplant clinician working at Westmead Hospital and the National Pancreas Transplant Unit in Sydney.
His MBBS was from the University of Sydney. Following his FRACP, specialising in nephrology, an MSc in pharmacology from the University of London, and two doctorates from the University of Sydney were obtained; as a PhD in the mechanisms of progression of chronic renal failure and an higher doctorate MD examining transplant graft dysfunction.
His research interests involve transplant renal function, the structural functional relationships of failing allografts, renal function estimation, the histopathology of acute and chronic transplant rejection, calcineurin inhibitor nephrotoxicity, BK virus allograft nephropathy and the Banff schema of diagnostic transplant pathology.
Dr Jen Li
Dr Jen Li is a Nephrologist who looks after people with kidney disease. Her main interest areas are kidney transplantation, monoclonal gammopathies of renal significance and auto-immune kidney disorders. Dr Li is a staff specialist nephrologist and transplant physician at Westmead Hospital and also a member of the Westmead Amyloidosis Clinic (multi-disciplinary team). She has experience across the breadth of nephrology and transplantation, having trained through Westmead, Blacktown, Nepean and Gosford hospitals for her fellowship (FRACP). She completed her medical degree (MBBS) at the University of Sydney and continues medical student teaching as a Senior Clinical Lecturer with the Sydney Medical School.
Dr Li completed her PhD at the University of Sydney and has active research portfolio in precision medicine and cellular therapies for kidney transplantation at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research. She is an associate editor at Transplantation journal and member of The Transplantation Society Early Career Member Committee.
Dr Ankit Sharma
Dr Ankit Sharma is a Nephrologist (Kidney Specialist) based in Westmead, Australia. He obtained his Bachelor of Medicine / Bachelor of Surgery from the University of New South Wales in 2008. Following this, he completed his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in the Adult Medicine Division in 2015 and completed a PhD in kidney transplant immunology in 2020.
Dr Sharma has a special interest in managing complex kidney diseases, including chronic kidney disease, glomerulonephritis, and kidney transplantation. With a patient-centered approach, Dr Sharma believes in building strong relationships with his patients. He takes the time to listen to their concerns and collaborates with them to develop personalised treatment plans.
Dr Sharma is known for his evidence-based approach to medicine and his commitment to staying up to date with the latest advancements in Nephrology. He regularly attends conferences and workshops to enhance his knowledge and skills. In addition to his clinical work, Dr Sharma is actively involved in medical research and education. He has published numerous articles in nephrology journals and regularly participates in teaching medical students and junior doctors.
Dr Robert Cheng
Dr Robert Cheng is a gastroenterologist and a physician. He is passionate about delivering a holistic approach to medical care and patient-centred health management.
Dr Cheng is a Staff Specialist Gastroenterologist at Westmead Hospital and a Clinical Senior Lecturer in medicine at the University of Sydney. He has expertise and research interests in bowel cancer screening, liver cancer, viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, autoimmune and cholestatic liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, coeliac disease and iron deficiency anaemia.
Dr Cheng has regular endoscopy lists at Macquarie University Hospital and North Shore Private Hospital. He is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and an active member of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia.
A medical graduate of the University of New South Wales, Dr Cheng received physician and gastroenterology training at major teaching hospitals in Sydney, including Royal North Shore and Royal Prince Alfred Hospitals. Dr Cheng then undertook a liver transplant fellowship at RPA, and subsequently completed his doctoral research in liver cancer genomics. Dr Cheng is actively involved in collaborative NAFLD, NASH and HCC clinical trials.
Dr Rose Trieu
Dr Rose Trieu is a Sydney based gastroenterologist. She completed her physician training at Westmead Hospital, where she continued on to finish her specialist gastroenterology training. She undertook several years of additional fellowship training in gastrointestinal motility disorders in the renowned Neurogastroenterology Unit at Royal North Shore Hospital. Currently she is completing her PhD exploring diagnostic and therapeutic options for diseases affecting the anorectum such as chronic constipation, faecal incontinence and obstetric related anal sphincter injuries.
Dr Trieu is a staff specialist gastroenterologist at Blacktown Hospital and Sydney Adventist Hospital. Her practice encompasses all aspects of gastroenterology and liver disease (bowel cancer screening, inflammatory bowel disease and liver disorders), she has a special interest in functional gut disorders. Examples include irritable bowel syndrome, chronic constipation, faecal incontinence, reflux disease and swallowing disorders. She has been trained in both oesophageal and anorectal manometry, procedures that assist in the diagnosis of such conditions. She has publications in the field of lower gastrointestinal dysmotility that have been presented at international conferences and continues to be actively involved in research within this field.
Dr Trieu is passionate about optimising the care she provides to her patients and endeavours to tailor her practice to the individual patient. She consults in English and Mandarin.
Dr Rita Lin
Dr Rita Lin graduated from the University of Sydney and obtained her fellowship of the Australian College of Physicians in 1992. Since 1995, she has been a consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at Westmead Hospital. Rita is also currently a clinical lecturer in Medicine at the University of Sydney. She is a member of the European Association for the Study of the Liver.
In addition to general Gastroenterology, Rita’s other area of expertise lies in Hepatology and in particular, management of chronic viral hepatitis. Rita was awarded her PhD in 1996 where her area of research has been in the treatment of chronic hepatitis C. She has been involved in a number of clinical trials at Westmead Hospital to assess the effectiveness of newer therapies in liver conditions including chronic and viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease and primary liver cancer.
Dr Mikey Xie
BMed MD, MMed (Clin Epi), FRACP
Dr Mikey Xie is a clinical endocrinologist committed to providing evidence- based, holistic and individualised care to his patients.
Dr Xie completed his medical degree with distinction from the University of New South Wales (UNSVV). He has also completed a Masters of Clinical Epidemiology through the University of Sydney. He underwent his specialist training at Royal Prince Alfred, Liverpool and Westmead Hospitals. He is currently practicing as a VMO at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital diabetes centre.
His interests include the treatment of diabetes (gestational, Type 1 and 2 diabetes), overweight and obesity, and general endocrinology including pituitary, thyroid, bone and adrenal disorders.
Dr Jonathan Marks
BSc(Med), MBBS, PhD, FRACP
Dr Jonathan Marks is a consultant endocrinologist, who has been in private practice in Westmead and Auburn for more than 30 years, treating diabetes and endocrine problems for many people, for decades. His specialist training was at Westmead Hospital and Middlesex Hospital in London. He worked as a consultant endocrinologist at Westmead Hospital, running the Westmead Hospital Obesity clinic and as an endocrinologist and general medicine physician at Auburn Hospital until retiring from hospital practice in 2022. Dr Marks was head of Department of Medicine at Auburn Hospital between 2015 and 2022.
His particular interests are the treatment of Type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes (GDM), overweight and obesity, all thyroid conditions, and men’s health.
